Flying with an ESA or a psychiatric service dog
What the Department of Transportation's rule says about emotional support animals and psychiatric service dogs, and what our travel letters are for. This is general information, not legal advice.
What the DOT rule changed
The Department of Transportation issued a rule in December 2020 (14 CFR Part 382). It has been in force since January 2021. Under it, airlines are not required to treat emotional support animals as service animals. Psychiatric service dogs are still treated as service animals.
PSD or ESA for travel
That is why our travel letters are for psychiatric service dog (PSD) travel, and why our housing letters are the ESA product. A PSD is a service dog. An ESA is not, for air travel.
What our travel letter is
The Travel Package includes an instant download of your airline letter, if a licensed professional decides that you qualify. It also lists automatic activation of your registration on the National ESA Directory (ESAC). The ESA Housing & Travel Package includes both a housing letter and an airline letter.
The Basic travel package is $109 and the Premium travel package is $200. The process is the same as for housing: a questionnaire, a consultation and a signed letter.
Before you fly
Airlines set their own policies, so check with yours before you travel. We cannot guarantee that an airline will accept a letter.
If an airline refuses our letter
If you were denied entry at an airport, or by an airline or hotel, because of our letter, you are refunded 100% of the fees under the refund policy. Email [email protected] with the business address, phone number and employee name, plus the handler name and the pet registration number.
This page is general information. We do not give legal or medical advice, and a licensed professional decides whether you qualify.
